AS part of its continued efforts to eliminate illegal mining in Guyana, the Natural Resources Ministry is sustaining ‘Operation El Dorado’.
At a media briefing yesterday, Minister Robert Persaud explained that a mechanism is in place to address every issue raised by miners, particularly as it relates to illegal mining and targeting of miners. Through this mechanism, reports are investigated by the Guyana Police Force and the Home Affairs Ministry.
Minister Persaud said while illegal mining continues to be an issue the Ministry and the GGMC are faced with, proper investigations must be carried out, and the matter must be dealt with in a professional manner.
“At the end of the day, we do not want the police or anyone to shake down any miner, local or foreign…but the issue of illegal mining by Brazilians or non-Brazilians must be brought under control,” he said.
At present, a team is conducting investigations into reports of illegal mining at Achiwib, Region 9.
Last year, the ministry launched operation El Dorado to combat the issue of illegal mining, and it continues to work to address the challenges that contribute to illegal mining activities.
