CHAIRMAN of the National Family Commission (NFC), Dr. Kwame Gilbert, has said that in an effort to take their activities to the doorsteps of men, the commission has been collaborating with the Men’s Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.

altHe made this disclosure on Tuesday last in an exclusive interview with the Guyana Chronicle when he said that the idea is to sensitise men and get them to recognise the seriousness of spousal abuse as well as the pivotal role they play as change agents in their families.
Dr. Gilbert pointed out that the role of men in providing the foundation of a stable environment for their families cannot be over emphasised and the commission’s efforts through collaboration with the bureau have been very successful.
He explained that they have had some engagements with men under an outreach programme with the Human Services Ministry, meeting men in several communities and having discussions.
According to him, if the life of the commission is extended beyond July, when the initial one-year period expires, they plan to be more proactive by engaging men in places such as sports clubs, barbershops, and even in rum shops if necessary.
He noted that as it is at present, the NFC has not embarked on a programme independently with respect to reaching out to men, but a lot of their engagements with this particular group in society have been through collaboration with the bureau.
