ONCE again, a Chinese investment is being called into question. The Guyana Forestry Commission(GFC) has invited all critics to peruse all relevant documentation on the Bai Shan Lin(BSL) agreement. Previously, the furore over a few mostly unskilled temporary jobs building the Marriott, failed to take into account other contractors’ jobs involved. The GFC has pointed out that this multi-million dollar Wood Processing Facility (WPF) will be an integrated factory, resulting in the large-scale production of high-end furniture. When completed, this investment will not only employ hundreds of Guyanese workers, but provide the skill transfers and value-added products that critics have been demanding. This would not have happened if the Marriott project was used to delay or prevent any other mutually beneficial foreign investment as a result. The only valid arguments the critics have is that these investments be made more public, and carefully monitored to ensure that Guyana’s labour laws and interests are being served as well as possible.
