Corporal Cleto Shooting – Suspicious car was heading to carry out a hit -several questioned, phone records being checked

THE Guyana Police Force (GPF) seems to be making some headway in their investigation into the fatal shooting of police Corporal Romain Cleto and the injury of two other ranks on Saturday night in Georgetown.

On Wednesday a senior police officer stated that the GPF has already questioned several persons in connection with the shooting and based on the description they received from persons the Force is confident that the right persons have been detained for questioning.
It was the Guyana Chronicle which reported that an eyewitness confirmed that the shooter was a “fearless skinny Indian boy.” On Wednesday the senior police officer confirmed that one of the persons questioned is indeed fitting the description as reported by this publication.
This publication also received information earlier last week that the men who were in the car that opened fire on the police vehicle were proceeding to a city bar where they were expected to carry out a hit.
The senior officer also confirmed that the GPF also received that information and is presently working to make a connection between the men who may have carried out the assault on the police officers and the man the police suspected of being the mastermind of the hit that went sour.
The confirmed information reaching this newspaper suggests that the men the police suspected of being in the vehicle and who are being questioned are denying being familiar with the man the police suspect of being the person who may have hired the men who were in the car.
Investigators have since made a note of the telephone numbers of all the persons who were held for questioning and those will be checked with the records to ascertain if any telephone contact was made between them and the man suspected of being the mastermind and hired those who were in the suspicious car at the time of the shooting.
Despite the questioning of several persons in relation to the killing of Corporal Cleto the police still have some main suspects who they are tracking.

One of the suspects in the shooting has not yet been located by the police and the senior officer vowed that the efforts will continue.
The 25-year old cop was shot dead on Saturday when a lone gunman exited a white vehicle and opened fire on a police patrol as the ranks were about to carry out a search of the vehicle and on its occupants. Two other police officers were injured in the shooting.
