Kuwait NGO to finance $90M masjid in Guyana

A non-governmental organisation in Kuwait will be financing the construction of a modern structure which will be the new masjid at Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara. Yesterday, officials of the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana and representatives from the soon-to-be-reconstructed masjid took part in a significant sod-turning exercise at the present location.
Speaking with the media , Religious Adviser of the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana, Sheik Moeen, explained that the present structure was reconstructed in 1964 and from that time to now the facility has become overcrowded with its members and attendees.
He explained that the generosity of the Kuwait non-governmental organisation will see the construction of the new facility bearing a price tag of just over $90M.
The Muslim leader said that the works to be conducted had its genesis in a proposal which was made by the executive of the Meten-Meer-Zorg masjid seeking a larger facility to effectively carry out its functions.
The new facility will include modern facilities, including a dining area, library and auditorium, among other things. According to Sheik Moeen, the present facility and management of the masjid do not only utilise their resources for the benefit of Muslims only, but this is extended to persons of other faiths.
He expressed gratitude to the people Kuwait for the funding and to all the other Muslim organisations which have supported the move and offered assistance.
Meanwhile, Regional Vice President of the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana, with responsibilities for the masjids on the West Coast and East Bank  Essequibo, who also serves as president of the Meten-Meer-Zorg West Masjid, Goolzar Namdar, explained that at present there are three structures in the compound of the proposed masjid, including the existing masjid.
He said that the buildings serve as a school for children, with an enrolment number of just about 300.
The masjid is also used for medical outreaches and other programmes . Namdar also will be a representative of the Central Islamic Organisation who will be overseeing the project.
Also present at the sod-turning yesterday afternoon was Regional Chairman Julius Faerber, who said that he was indeed heartened to have learnt that the masjid will be reconstructed.
He said that while there will be the real big picture of serving the worshippers and making them more comfortable, it is also seen as a facility which will bring added services and assistance to the community.
The new masjid is expected to accommodate more than 500 worshippers and the first phase of construction will commence within two weeks time, with the entire project taking approximately nine months.
During that time, worshippers will occupy the nursery and primary schools which are located in the same compound.
