MAGISTRATE Roby Benn fined Mohabir Kallooram $5,000 and ordered him to do 50 hours community service on conviction for marijuana possession.
The convict, of Free Yard, Port Mourant, Corentyne pleaded guilty, yesterday, to having two grammes of cannabis sativa last March 29.
If Kallooram fails to pay the fine or complete the community service in three months, he will have to serve one year imprisonment.
The court was told that the cane harvester was seen acting in a suspicious manner and when police, on mobile patrol in Rose Hall Town, stopped and searched him, they found a transparent plastic bag containing leaves, seeds, and stems of the hemp plant.
Kallooram was escorted to the Rose Hall Police Outpost, where the prohibited substance was weighed.
Asked what he had to say before the sentence was imposed, the defendant said it was his first offence and begged for a chance.
“I will behave myself,” he promised.
