Tug collides with Chinese ferry at Parika, halts service

BK INTERNATIONAL tug, M.V. Kyle late Wednesday evening collided with Transport & Harbours Department (T&HD) newly-acquired Chinese ferry, M.V. Kanawan at Parika Stelling, resulting in damage that brought the Parika to Supenaam ferry service to a halt.

altCaptain of the M.V. Kanawan, Mr. Sultan told this newspaper in an exclusive interview at the Parika Stelling that shortly after 22:00 hrs they heard a loud bang on the vessel and upon investigating they discovered that the tug had collided with the ferry.
When this newspaper visited the Parika Stelling repair works were being undertaken by BK International while the T&HD mechanical engineering specialist Dr. Clinton Hazel explained that work on the M.V. Kanawan was about 60% completed and the remainder was expected to be done within two hours if the tidal and weather conditions were favourable.alt
He noted that BK International had taken full responsibility for the accident and had dispatched a team which had commenced repairs to the ferry.
Also present onboard were officials from the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) conducting inspection to the works.
The M.V. Kanawan which was expected to ply the Parika to Supenaam route at 02:45 hrs could not depart.
