Echo president urges change of attitudes towards environment

PRESIDENT of the Environmental Community Health Organisation (Echo) clubs in Guyana, Tassia Bacchus, is stressing the importance of protecting Planet Earth from the sources of harmful actions  due to the daily threat of pollution and strongly urges a  change of  attitudes towards the environment in order to fight climate change.

Bacchus underscored this concern in a press statement she issued in observance of Earth Day that is being observed today  under the theme, “The Face of Climate Change”.
Good practices, she noted, include turning the water off while brushing one’s teeth, purchasing reusable water bottles and washing laundry with cold water. Furthermore, it is advised that appliances and chargers be unplugged even when they are not in use.
Bacchus also said that natural lighting should be used as often as possible by keeping shades and curtains opened during the day, while the use of one high-wattage bulb is less expensive than using several low-wattage bulbs.
The Echo president  further advised that lights be turned off when they’re not in use, even if it is just for a short time, as leaving lights on when not needed uses up more energy than turning them on and off .

“The science of climate change is complex but everyone should know the basics: the earth is heating up because gases produced from vehicles, power plants, deforestation, and other sources are building up in the atmosphere, acting like a thick blanket over our planet. We can all reduce climate change by doing our part to decrease the emission of heat-trapping gases to the atmosphere.
“When it comes to climate change, every single one of our 756,040 fellow citizens – every family, every small and large business and every community – will need to change our attitudes towards the environment. Without changes to our daily lives, the fight against climate change doesn’t have a chance,” Bacchus said in the release.
Earth Day is observed annually on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It is considered as the awakening of considerable senses for the protection and further development of a ‘go green’ attitude for the earth.

“Therefore, steps should be taken for further protection and longevity of the earth. Many believe that the solution to climate change is to spread awareness to anything that helps reduce an individual’s carbon footprint,” the release concluded.
