A Chinese restaurant proprietor was on Friday was shot and wounded by bandits who robbed him at his restaurant in the city, then held up a patron and took away his jewellery and cash before escaping.
Around 15:30 hours, Shao Yang Dong, 50, was in his restaurant at Lamaha Street, Georgetown, when five men entered, two of whom were armed with handguns.
Police said one of the armed men shot Shao Yang Dong to his right thigh, then proceed to rob him and the patron. The robbers escaped with an undisclosed sum of cash and jewellery.
Shao Yang Dong was later admitted to the Guyana Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for medical treatment.
Investigations are in progress.
Meanwhile, in another shooting incident on Friday around 23:40 hours, a minibus driver narrowly escaped death when he was shot to the left side of his face, by a male passenger.
The incident stemmed from the passenger tendering ‘short fare’ (insufficient cash) to the minibus conductor.
According to a police release, the minibus driver Desmond Marcus, 59 years, of North Ruimveldt, got into an argument with the passenger who got off at National Avenue, South Ruimveldt, and refused to pay the stipulated fare.
During the argument the passenger pulled out a firearm and discharged a round at Desmond Marcus, grazing the left side of his face. The man then escaped.
Marcus was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted. Investigations are in progress.
