FAST bowler Sheldon Cotterell used the overcast conditions to the best of his ability to steamroll Guyana for 96, handing Jamaica first inning’s points midway during the second session of their West Indies Cricket Board 7th round Regional 4-Day encounter at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, yesterday.
Replying to Jamaica’s 208, of which Carlton Baugh Jr. top scored with 81 against the bowling of Keon Joseph (4 for 53) and Devendra Bishoo (3 for 51), Guyana were bowled out for 96, with Veerasammy Permaul hitting an unbeaten 49 while Cotterell snared 4 for 31, David Bernard Jr. 3 for 18 and Andrew Richardson 2 for 31.
Batting a second time with a lead of 112 runs, Jamaica raced to 52 for 2 at tea, losing the wickets of Danza Hyatt who was caught at long on by Assad Fudadin for 40 (64balls, 5×4) and Nkrumah Bonner (01), both off Steven Jacobs.
Jamaica lost Brenton Parchment (10), Tamar Lambert (19), Bernard Jr. (00), before Baugh Jr. joined forces with Jermaine Blackwood and they repeated their first innings performance, by adding an unbeaten 96 for the sixth wicket to see Jamaica to 183 for 5 when bad light stopped play at 17:38 hrs.
Baugh, who was unbeaten on 59 at the close, reached his second half century of the match and 21st in his career off 55 balls with six fours and one six while Blackwood was on 41, as Jamaica stretched their lead to 295 with five wickets in hand.
Earlier in the day, Guyana used 2.5 overs to remove Jamaica’s final batsman, doing so when Baugh Jr. offered Joseph a return catch after facing 156 balls and hitting six fours in his resilient knock, which helped rescued the Jamaicans from 12 for 4 on the opening day.
But, inept batting saw Guyana lose the wickets of Rajendra Chandrika, Leon Johnson, Chandrapaul Hemraj and Jacobs without scoring, while Fudadin made 01, Guyana slumped to 10 for 5 within the 30 minutes of their reply.
Narsingh Deonarine and Anthony Bramble sought to repair the damage, but Deonarine was bowled by Cotterell, leaving alone a delivery that swung back in from outside off stump for 13 (27balls, 2×4) at 25 for 6.
When Bishoo edged one to Baugh Jr. off Richardson, Guyana were 30 for 7. Soon after it should have been 31 for 8, but Tamar Lambert failed to hold on to the opportunity given by Bramble who tried to steer Richardson to third man on 13.
Permaul hit Richardson over backward square leg for 6, followed by a four through extra cover, to raise Guyana’s 50, which was followed by another six over midwicket, this time off Cotterell after lunch that saw Guyana over the follow- on target.
Bernard Jr. replaced Richardson and removed Bramble, lbw for 15, before the heavens opened with Guyana 53 for 8 and Permaul on 20 on the stroke of lunch.
Joseph showed he was no rabbit with the bat, joining forces with Permaul following Ronsford Beaton’s demise, when he drove Bernard Jr. on the up through extra cover for a four.
They added 35 runs for the 10th wicket, before Joseph’s off stump was rocked back by Bernard Jr. for 6, leaving Permaul unbeaten on 49 (58balls, 4×4, 2×6 92 mins), as Guyana lost first innings points to the Jamaicans who led by 112.
