FIRE of unknown origin completely destroyed a two-storey, concrete and wooden building at Old Road, Maria’s Lodge, Essequibo Coast on Sunday night.
The house was reportedly unoccupied at time of the fire, at around 19:50 hrs, since the owner and lone occupant of the building, Asaf Gani, had died a few days ago, and his brother, Shaheed Gani, had assumed responsibility to put on and take off the lights in the building.
Shaheed said the building was well furnished, and losses are estimated to be in the millions. Moreover, foul play has not been ruled out.
The Guyana Fire Service at Anna Regina responded promptly, but the house was already destroyed when they arrived on the scene.
Investigations to determine the cause of the fire are ongoing.
