The new generation 1.5 ‘Telsa’ MRI also called ‘BRIVO MR-355’, manufactured by General Electric (GE), offers excellent images of any body part, including making available complete evaluation of the whole spinal cord, vertebrae and all discs, also for cancers, polytrauma or screening for any serious illness.
With the equipment being fully functional, that hospital is now far ahead of the other MRI facilities locally, said Dr. Mahendra Prasad Samal, a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, who is responsible for its operation.
He gave the media a briefing followed by a tour of the additions.
Samal said Guyana had previously lacked such capability that is most important to make the final diagnosis of any brain, spine, soft tissue and bone condition.
He explained that MRI, as a modality, gives the best resolution of internal organs as compared to any other scanner.
“It gives great details of body parts, pathological processes and even chemical constitution of an area of the body,” Samal said, adding that another advantage the MRI has over x-rays or computed tomography (CT) scans, is that it makes image details in vertical, horizontal or even oblique slices and the process is done without any harmful radiation.
IDEAL IMAGING
He said that proves to be an ideal imaging system for children and pregnant women.
Incredibly, the machine can detect a stroke at the earliest possible time, so that the revascularisation therapy can be initiated before the window period, Samal said.
He informed that, with more cases of strokes, or impending stroke being seen by doctors now, due to the intense heat occasioned by global warming, there is ever more need for the services of such an advanced type of MRI machine.
Samal advised that people suspected of developing fits should undergo an MRI to detect any possible causes, including encephalitis and it will show the first sign of a brain disease.
He indicated that emergency MRI services are offered daily, round the clock, including on holidays.
