TWO MINERS KILLED : – one shot in the head, other stabbed in the back

THE Guyana Police Force yesterday reported that two Guyanese miners have been killed, one of whom was shot in the head in Guyana’s remote North West District while the other was fatally stabbed in the back in the border village of ‘Mundo’ in Venezuela. The police said both incidents occurred on Friday last, and a suspect has so far been arrested in connection with one of the homicides.

At about 07:00 hrs on Friday last, acting on information received, police ranks from Yarakita Police Station went to ‘Bruck Up’ Landing in the North West District where the body of miner Randy Rafael, 23 years, of Kamwatta Village, also in the North West, was “found lying in a hammock with a suspected gunshot wound to the head”. Police said the suspect has not yet been arrested.

While at ‘Bruck Up’ Landing, the ranks received further information about another body of a Guyanese national of Amerindian descent that had been brought over earlier in the day from the border village of ‘Mundo’ in Venezuela.

Police investigations revealed that miner Titus Daniels of Yarakita was allegedly fatally stabbed to his back by another Guyanese miner during an altercation at ‘Mundo’.
The police said “other Guyanese miners arrested the suspect and brought back the body of Daniels to Guyana”. The suspect was handed over to the police and is in custody.

Efforts are in train to bring the bodies to Mabaruma, also in the North West, and the police force said investigations into both matters are in progress.
