Policeman charged with Marudi Mountain assault

POLICE Corporal Nafaste Morris, 31, of Lot 7 Ogle Front, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell on Friday last, charged on four counts of unlawful assault. He pleaded not guilty to having, on Wednesday, March 27, at Marudi Mountain, South Rupununi, unlawfully assaulted Otillo Perreira, Lorenzo Prince, Errol Prince and Verona Prince.
Police Sergeant Alexis David-Hossanah, prosecuting, told the court that, the defendant tried to remove the virtual complainants by pushing them and, when they advanced towards him, he picked up a piece of tree limb and lashed them about their hands and feet.
But attorney-at-law, Mr. Patrice Henry for the defence, said Morris was acting in the execution of his duty and he was granted $20,000 bail on each charge, pending his return to court on May 20.
