ODINGA Lumumba, the president of Guyana’s top club Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United yesterday threw his support behind Guyana Football Federation (GFF) presidential candidate Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major, saying he is the best man for the job when the election is held this Friday. Lumumba, who at one time threw his hat into the race, said he met and held discussions with the four candidates, namely Major, Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Alfred King, Ivan Persaud and Christopher Matthias, from which Major and King came out on top. “A few weeks ago, I gave an interview based on my analysis of the four candidates, following which I held discussions with each candidate and having assessed them based on those discussions came to the conclusion that Major and King were head and shoulders above the pack,” stated Lumumba.
However, Lumumba who was addressing the media fraternity at the Waterchris Hotel, believes that both individuals had the opportunity to confront former GFF president Colin Klass on the numerous discrepancies that were facing Guyana’s football, but failed to do so.
“I think that they both should have confronted Klass on the numerous discrepancies that were facing Guyana’s football, which they failed to do. However, King’s integrity and administrative skills are well known while he is without any controversy.
On the other hand, Major, who before his resignation formed part of the Kashif and Shanghai Organisation, failed to stand up to Klass even when he was in a better position to do so, seeing that he’s the Organising Secretary of the GFF.”
Lumumba added, “That position in itself enabled Major to raise funds for several national teams’ preparations for international engagements while he stayed in contact with FIFA and CONCACAF which, along with his organisational skills, now enabled me to endorse him for the presidency of the GFF.”
