BRILLIANT riding from Roraima Bikers Club’s Alonzo Greaves, saw the cyclists outsprint national road champion Orville Hinds to take the feature event of the Universal Auto and General Supplies 11-race cycle programme held around the inner circuit of the National Park yesterday morning. Greaves stopped the clock of timekeeper Joseph Britton at 1h:15m.53:33secs, with Hinds, Junior Sportsman-of-the-Year Paul De Nobrega, Hinds’ younger brother Delroy, Wazim Gafoor and John Charles completing the top six paying positions.
Thirty-two cyclists, including the top six finishers, Robin Persaud, Jude Bentley, Walter Grant-Stuart, Michael Anthony, Raul Leal, Raynauth Jeffrey, Christopher Persaud, Junior Niles and former national junior road race champion Christopher Holder, faced the starter for the feature event.
As early as the third lap, the top six finishers along with Jeffrey, Robin Persaud, Niles, Bentley and Holder made a move to the front, before Greaves and Orville Hinds made their move to go ahead, taking a lead of 75 metres over the first peloton, which they increased as the laps went by.
Their pace at the front saw them overtake Robin Persaud, Niles, Grant-Stuart, Jeffrey and Albert Philander just to name a few with two laps to go, with Bentley doing his own breakaway to avoid being lapped, following which Greaves underlined his ability as the best sprinter on local soil, when he outsprinted Orville Hinds to take the top prize.
Greaves took four of the eight prime prizes that were up for grabs, with Bentley taking three and Orville Hinds the other one.
