ONE is still amazed, even shocked, that APNU Member of Parliament, Mr. Sydney Allicock could have made such a horribly insulting statement about the Rupununi Region and its development, during his response to Budget 2013 in the National Assembly. It must be questioned whether Allicock resides on another planet. For someone, who surely knows the truth as to the Amerindian Development Programmes, to have uttered such an insulting and demeaning statement about that fast developing geographic space of Guyana, he has only succeeded in greatly diminishing the self-respect and stature he had previously commanded from among his fellow Amerindians.
And he has done so, all in the name of a brand of well known opposition politics that can only be described as sterile, decrepit, in the traditional category of NO politics.
Did Allicock really believe that such a statement, comprehensibly unconscionable, ridiculous, reckless and ungrateful, would have escaped especially the notice of his fellow Amerindians, particularly those in the Rupununi?
The responses from this locale are not only very angry in tone, but unequivocally condemnatory of Allicock, for he has degraded their personal pride, their way of life, their region and its achievements since 1993, and in the process, their standing as a people. Therefore one can appreciate Amerindian feelings of hurt.
Moreover, their protests against his LIE are made because their communities have been experiencing qualitative changes in health, education and water facilities, thereby improving their very quality of life.
These are just a sample of the critical interventions that have given Amerindians and their communities that assurance and confidence of being a true part of the Guyanese family mosaic, since 1993. Even Allicock’s village of Surama, would have benefitted from the annual Presidential Grant of $500,000, apart from a minibus for assisting in the transportation of schoolchildren.
As sure as day, there is going to be further condemnation from other Amerindians and their communities as well, for the simple reason that they would have interpret such an attack on the Rupununi and its development, as being similarly carried out on their individual communities. For them all, such means a deliberate diminution of the numerous socio-economic programmes that have benefitted their communities. Certainly, they will not accept such disparagement; for they are indeed proud as to what they have achieved and their place of pride as Guyanese, under the PPP/C government.
So far, there has not been any statement from APNU especially, that must distance the party from such a derogatory remark by its member, Allicock, to the Rupununi region and its citizens.
There has also been deafening silence from the Alliance For Change (AFC) party. Both these parties must condemn such an affront, with the APNU severely censuring Allicock. An apology from the latter would also be appropriate.
Amerindian development and achievements must not be insulted!
