POLICE Lance Corporal Edon Greene, 44, burst into tears yesterday after being convicted and fined for attempting to obstruct the course of justice.
She pleaded guilty to the offence before Magistrate Judy Latchman, admitting that, between Saturday, July 28, and Thursday, September 27, 2012, at Brickdam, with intent to defeat the course of justice, she willfully destroyed two firearm licence books, in order to prevent them being audited and certified.
Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt, prosecuting, said, at that time, she was employed within the Guyana Police Force and attached to the Firearms Section at Brickdam, Georgetown.
The prosecutor said, during the period she was entrusted with books to issue licences on behalf of the State and checks revealed that two of the volumes were not accounted for and, after investigations disclosed that they had been burnt, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) advised that Greene be charged.
Greene said her reason for committing the crime is that she encountered some problems, but she apologised for the embarrassment she caused the Force.
She was ordered to pay a fine of $160,000 with the alternative of 24 months imprisonment.
