Georgetown meet Slingerz in tomorrow’s Mayor’s Cup semis … GDF needle Fruta Conquerors

FOLLOWING Guyana Defence Force’s (GDF) 1-0 quarterfinal victory in this year’s Mayor’s Cup football tournament, tomorrow night’s semi-final action at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground will be a Georgetown versus West Demerara affair, with the winners clashing for the G$1M first-place purse on Sunday.

Marlon Benjamin’s 32nd minute strike was all the Army Boys needed to get past the Tucville-based Fruta Conquerors lineup in their replayed fixture, after a power failure brought an abrupt end to things when the two sides met last Thursday at the same venue.
In tomorrow night’s action, GDF, who will be looking to Benjamin, Eusi ‘Boneyman’ Phillips, Ron Morrison, Delwin Fraser, Desford Williams and Shawn Arthur, will oppose new kids on the block, Slingerz Football Club, including Dwayne Jacobs, brothers Tishard and Pierre Joseph and Ronson Williams, in the first semifinal at 18:30hrs.
The second contest pits national club champions and Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super League frontrunners Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United against Den Amstel at 20:30hrs.
Alpha, who will be led by Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams along with Dwight Peters, Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson, Richard Reynolds, Andrew Murray and Travis Grant, will be approaching this game cautiously, since their opponents are known to be giant-killers on their day.
Ansa McAl, MACORP, Nazir Mohammed of Mohammed’s Enterprise, General Equipment and Guyana Beverage Company are some of the members of Corporate Guyana who are throwing their support behind this tournament which has $50 ,000, $300 000 and $200 000 at stake for the second-, third- and fourth-placed finishers respectively.
