President joins in Easter kite-flying tradition

As is customary, in the spirit of the festivity of Easter, Government officials would visit several locations and intermingle with citizens.

altThis Easter was no different as President Donald Ramotar and several Cabinet Ministers, including Minister of Tourism (acting) Irfaan Ali and Minister of Legal Affairs and Attorney General Anil Nandlall met and interacted with those in Region Six, who chose to pass their Easter Monday at the Number 63 Beach, one of the most popular kite flying locations.
The President was warmly received by the residents who greeted him with hugs and kisses. The President also shared some photo opportunities with the residents.
Thousands of people were at the beach, flying kites of all descriptions, colours and sizes. Others chose to use the day for picknicking with family and friends.
Though kite flying is not unique to Guyana, the activity which is enjoyed by all ethnic and religious groups generally starts by the appearance of kites in the sky in the weeks leading up to Easter. It culminates with the massive airborne celebration on Easter Monday especially across coastal areas.
Easter in Guyana is celebrated with special church services, recognising the crucifixion and resurrection of the Christ.
The crucifixion is remembered on Good Friday and the resurrection on Easter Sunday.
The National Park in Georgetown, Joe Vieira Park in Region Three, Hope Beach in Region Four and the Number 63 Beach in Region Six are among the traditional locations for kite flying.
All of these locations were packed to capacity with a very festive atmosphere as families utilised the day for  picknicking, with music in attendance. The most colourful spectacle though was the  thousands of colourful kites that dotted the sky.
