A WOMAN is now counting her losses after a fire, suspected of being electrical in origin, destroyed part of her Buxton, East Coast Demerara house, while she was away from it.
The Guyana Chronicle was told that the home owner, Donna Coxfield also known as Ann, had left for Georgetown early yesterday morning and there was no one inside the building when flames were seen emanating from the Lot 65 Company Road property.
Initial investigations by the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) indicated that the blaze may have started in the ceiling because of a faulty electricity connection.
Residents in the community reported that they first saw the smoke just after 07:00 hrs and they, immediately, formed a bucket brigade which was successful in extinguishing the conflagration before a GFS tender arrived.
However, by then, there was very little in the house that could have been saved as everything was damaged either by water or fire.
The siren on the tender that responded was not functioning and clearing the way en route to its destination was somewhat challenging.
The parts of the house mostly affected were the ceiling and the middle room but another room, which was being used as storage, did not suffer much damage nor its contents.
This newspaper was informed that the occupant of the house usually performs rituals with the use of fires and, only two days ago, there was a slight mishap when flames engulfed the veranda during one of her routine fiery activities.
Yesterday morning, she could not compose herself and was in and out of consciousness.
Coxfield is believed to have suffered loss estimated in millions of dollars even as the police and the GFS continue investigating the destruction.
