THE Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) yesterday responded to the Kaieteur Newspaper’s March 26, 2013, article which was published under the headline, ‘Irregularities at Mahdia Post Office’. GPOC said it “deems the Kaieteur Newspaper’s account of the ongoing investigation surrounding the Mahdia Post Office as inaccurate and mischievous”.
GPOC said it also finds it “appalling” that no attempt was made by the Kaieteur News to contact the Postmaster General to verify any speculations regarding the aforesaid investigation.
Further, the GPOC emphasised that it does not condone fraudulent activities at any level. The Corporation said it will act resolutely to investigate and curtail any misdemeanour should a staff member be found in breach of the standard operating procedures and policies.
It was based on that established premise that the Management of GPOC acted decisively in the case of Mahdia. It was unearthed that the postmaster could not give an account for in excess of $15 million.
Moreover, GPOC said it would like to advise that the investigation surrounding the Mahdia Post Office is within the jurisdiction of the Guyana Police Force. The public is also advised that Mr. Oswald Whyte is no longer employed with GPOC and is not authorised to transact any business on behalf of the Corporation.
