AFTER an exhilarating showdown that came down to sudden death, St. George’s Secondary school defeated South Ruimveldt to be crowned the Milo Under-20 Schools Football Champion on Saturday night at the Ministry of Education (MOE) Ground, Carifesta Avenue.
Owing to an excellent performance by their goal keeper Royston Dublin who was eventually adjudged the Tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP), St. George’s won 5 – 4 in sudden death penalty kicks after neither team was able to break the nil all deadlock during full time and extra time.
It was a battle of the custodians in the final as the opposition’s goalkeeper David George also had a good game and made some crucial saves in the opening attempts of the penalty shootout.
The teams, evenly matched on the night, put forth their best performance but with the unrelenting commitment from both sides, there was no goal in site even though they had numerous attempts on goal.
St. George’s won the $200,000 for first place while South Ruimveldt had to settle for the runner up prize of $100,000.
Tucville was third and took home $50,000 while Carmel was fourth and carted off with $25,000.
In the curtain rasier, Tucville steamrolled Carmel 5 – 1; Keifer Brandt (75th and 79th) netted a brace, while Dorwin Filter (25th), Shamar Wilson (32nd) and Samuel Dublin (85th) accounted for the rest of goals.
It was a lop-sided match for the first half as Tucville, clearly the superior team with ball handling and distribution, was persistently attacking the goal. (Kizan Brumell)
