CHAIRMAN of Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr. Parmanand Persaud has warned Puran Brothers, which is responsible for collecting and removing household garbage on the Essequibo Coast, that the company will be stopped from using the Lima dump site if it cannot follow the regulations specified in the contract document signed with the Government.
He told members of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), at a statutory meeting on Tuesday, that he is not satisfied with the manner in which the contractor is dumping the garbage.
According to the Chairman, he and the Minister of Agriculture Dr. Leslie Ramsammy recently visited the location and were very disturbed to see the lawless manner in which garbage was dumped there. “The place is very dirty with thousands of flies,” he said.
Persaud said the contracted company is not digging pits, compacting or burying garbage in accordance with the regulations in the contract.
He said a meeting was held with officials of the company to address the issue and they were told to have the situation changed or the site will be closed within a week.
In response, the company promised to get an excavator, by today, so pits can be dug and garbage compacted and buried decently.
Persaud said the company is dumping more to the housing area than farther to the backdam while charging residents $360 to collect and remove a 45-gallon barrel of garbage.
