In one of two fires… Arson causes damage at Eccles workshop

A MALICIOUSLY set fire destroyed the walls and machinery in an Eccles, East Bank Demerara auto workshop on Tuesday night.

Chief Fire Officer Marlon Gentle said they received the call and two tenders from West Ruimveldt and Central fire stations in Georgetown responded and contained the blaze which started  about 18:30 hrs.
He said the arson was at Lot 1826 Industrial Site, Eccles, at the property owned by Khemraj Brijlal, who had secured his business place and gone home Tuesday afternoon before being  alerted to the conflagration later.
Gentle said the GFS was able to preserve the scene with some machinery damage inside the edifice and investigations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, a blaze at Lethem, Rupununi, caused the destruction of a storage bond and a vehicle at Lot 195 Beverly Hall, also on Tuesday night. But the house was saved after the Lethem Auxiliary Fire Service was mobilised and responded.
Gentle said that conflagration started about 22:38 hrs from an unattended working generator in the bond owned by Earl Grimmond.
A pick-up vehicle and contents of the bond belonging to the latter were destroyed.
