GUYANA’S table tennis prodigy and 2012 Junior Sportswoman-of-the-Year, Chelsea Edghill captured two titles last Sunday when the two-day Silver Bowl Junior Table Tennis Championships ended in Trinidad and Tobago at Maloney Indoor Complex.
Edghill, who beat the top juniors and seniors for the Super Singles title when she was last here in December, secured a double crown in this tournament for the second straight year, retaining her Under-18 title with an 11-7, 11-6, 15-13 triumph over Catherine Spicer.
The 2012 Under-15 Caribbean Junior Championships runner-up, had earlier been pushed to a deciding fifth game before defeating Trinidad’s Ashley Quashie 9-11, 11-3, 7-11, 11-6, 11-4 in the Under-21 final.
Quashie had also been involved in a thrilling five-setter in the semis when she edged Spicer 9-11, 11-4, 7-11, 11-4, 12-10, while Edghill had gotten into the title match with an 11-9, 11-13, 11-3, 11-8 victory over Brittany Joseph.
Joseph, who at age 14 became one of Trinidad’s youngest-ever national senior champs, last year, was injured in the group stage of the Under-18 competition and was forced to withdraw, while Edghill’s brother Kyle finished as runner-up in the U-15 competition.
