THE Women’s  Progressive Organisation, (WPO), women’s arm of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), has strongly condemned the verbal abuse of Dr. Vishalie Sharma, Medical Superintendent of the New Amsterdam Public Hospital and is calling on the Alliance For Change and Attorney at Law, Executive Member  of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Mr. Charrandas Persaud to publicly apologise to her immediately.

The WPO said on Saturday March 2, 2013 at Adephi, Canje, Berbice at 18:17 hours. Mr. Moses Nagamootoo and Mr. Khemraj Ramjattan, both Members of Parliament of the AFC witnessed the most vicious onslaught on one of Guyana’s daughter and caregiver. These men, once considered advocates for women’s rights, who defended and promoted women’s equality and empowerment stood silent while one of their leading members Mr. Charrandas Persaud carried out a verbal assault on a professional caregiver
“As three learned lawyers of this land, they ought to know that there are many ways to deal with medical impropriety, if there was any.  There is no excuse whatsoever to stand at a public platform and subjugate a woman to this kind of assault, a few days before International Women’s Day. “
“We call on the women of the AFC to denounce this atrocious behaviour of one of its leading members and calls for an immediate apology by the two other leading members who were present Mr. Ramjattan and Mr. Nagamoootoo,  “ the WPO said in a statement
The WPO said it  is disturbed by the disgusting behavior by the male leaders within the AFC who preaches public morality but do not practice it their own lives.
“All women, notwithstanding their race, class, religion, body built or other personal traits have the right under the constitution of Guyana to be employed in any profession they are qualified for. To insinuate that Dr. Sharma, because of her body weight and size, should not be employed as a doctor at the New Amsterdam Hospital is not only discriminatory but is a violation of the constitution. “
“WPO calls on all Guyanese to denounce this disgraceful outburst of Mr. Charandass and calls on the Alliance for Change and Bar Association to take a stand on this disgusting behavior of one of its members.”
“AFC must apologise to Guyanese women and Dr. Sharma now!” the statement said
