GANDHI Youth Organisation (GYO) shocked the more illustrious Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) while Everest Cricket Club (ECC) proved their superiority over Transport Sports Club (TSC) as action in the Georgetown Cricket Association organised Hadi’s Mall Incorporated Heroes Cup first division competition continued last weekend.
In the same tournament, both Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) and Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) were forced to settle for first innings points in their respective encounters against Police Sports Club (PSC) and Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) respectively.
At Camp Road, ECC batted first and scored an imposing 385 for 2 declared, with discarded national openers Rajendra Chandrika hitting an unbeaten 226 (23×4, 3×6) and Chandrapaul Hemraj 112 (10×4, 5×6).
When TSC batted, they were bowled out for 177 with Sherwin Lovell 44 and Marvin Cato 24 leading their batting against the bowling of Amir Khan who took 6 for 39 and Troy Gonsalves whose 3 for 70 enabled ECC to gain a first innings lead of 208.
Asked to follow-on, TSC were bowled out for 135 off 29.4 overs, with Lovell hitting an even half century and Clive Andries 31, while Gonsalves took 5 for 60 and Khan 2 for 39 to hand ECC Victory by an innings and 73 runs.
At the MSC ground on Thomas Lands, the home team who suffered an embarrassing 10 wicket defeat at the hands of TSC in the previous round, faced GYO and succumbed to their lesser known opponents by 133 runs, with just over one hour left in the final day’s play yesterday.
Batting first, GYO were bowled out for 200 off 57.3 overs with Chris Deonarine 71 (12×4), Anthony Ifill 29 (4×4, 1×6) and Wazeer Mohammed 29 (2×4) leading their batting, even as Shaquille Williams took 4 for 49 and received support from Nichosie Barker (2-4) and Seon Daniels’ 2 for 57.
When MSC batted, they found the bowling of Kamesh Yadram who took 6 for 37 and Joey Shivgobin’s 2 for 10 too much to handle and folded for 107, with Kwame Crosse’ 32 being the lone responsible innings.
With a lead of 93, GYO batted a second time and reached 152 for 9 off 49.2 overs before declaring their innings close, with Mohammed 41 (2×4), Shivgobin 39 (6×4, 2×6) and Ifill 26 (3×4, 1×6) leading their cause as Williams snared 5 for 74 (match figures of 9-113).
Asked to score 236 to record a come form behind win, MSC were bowled out for 112 inside 25.3 overs, with number 11 batsman Edwin Burnett’s 34 being their lone double figure score, as Yadram 3-51 (9-88), Wazim Ali 3-12 and Ifill 2-20, piloted GYO to victory.
At DCC, the home team made 310 for 9 declared off 84.1 overs against GNIC, with national Under-17 wicketkeeper batsman Kemal Savory following up his ton in the previous round with 96 (13×4, 2×6), Travis Dowlin 60 (6×4, 1×6) and Brian Sattaur 40 (7×4, 1×6) leading the batting.
Ranole Bourne took 3 for 80 for GNIC who were bowled out for 170 inside 56.4 overs, with Marc Nicholson 87 (10×4, 2×6) and Premchand Sookdeo 19 leading their batting.
Andre Stoll snared 5 for 35, Kevin George 3 for 32 and Dexter George2 for 20 for DCC, who were restricted to 74 for 9 in their second innings in the hunt for quick runs, as only Andrew Lyght Jnr 38 (4×4, 3×6) and Stoll’s 19 (2×4, 1×6) managed to contribute.
Chairman of the Guyana Cricket Board senior selection committee Rayon Griffith took 5 for 26 and Sookdeo 4 for 19 for GNIC who were asked to score 215 off 47 overs to win the contest but reached 179 for 5 off 33 overs.
Nicholson led their batting with 71 (7×4, 3×6), Griffith returned to hit a robust 42 (3×6, 1×4) and Bourne 32 (5×4), while Cavell Reece took 2 for 19, Stoll 2 for 39 and Orlando Sturge 1 for 30 when fading light stopped play.
At Bourda, PSC 189 off 53.5 overs (Jason Heyliger 59 (6×4, 1×6), Rawle Browne 44 (9×4 and Pernell London 42 (7×4) Gavin Singh 5 for 24, Devon Lord 2 for 19 and Treon Forde 2 for 72 and 222 for 9 (Heyliger 44; 8×4, Trevor Benn 44; 4×4, 1×6, Reginald Rodrigues 41; 4×4 and Rawle Browne 33; 5×4).
