A MAN who admitted stealing a BlackBerry cell phone was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment yesterday.
The custodial penalty was imposed on Junior Adams (no address given) by Magistrate Judy Latchman, before whom, he pleaded guilty to the February 22 offence.
Particulars of the charge said the phone, valued $90,000 and belonged to Darnell Johnson.
The convict had asked the court to be lenient with him and inflict a small sentence.
Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt, prosecuting, said the virtual complainant had gone to visit his uncle at Stabroek Market and, when he disembarked his vehicle, he left the instrument in the car.
The owner had only gone about 20 feet away when he turned around and saw the thief push his hands through a window, pick up the instrument and run away.
The prosecutor said the virtual complainant was reporting the theft at the Stabroek Police Outpost when he saw the thief passing and had him arrested immediately.
However, the phone was not recovered.
