Police objection to bail upheld in marijuana bust

MAGISTRATE Adela Nagamootoo, last Monday, remanded Trevor Grant to prison on drug trafficking charge.

He was refused bail after Police Corporal Orin Joseph objected to bail for him, citing the law.
Particulars of the offence said he was in possession of four kilogrammes of cannabis sativa (marijuana) for the purpose of trafficking.
Defence Counsel Ramesh Rajkumar told the court that the police had, indeed, gone to the Lot 40 Stanleytown residence which was occupied by other persons on February 8.
But the lawyer said nothing was found on Grant’s person or his surroundings, yet the police claim there was a find.
However, the prosecutor informed the court that, on arrival at the house, the police enquired from the defendant which was his room and it having been pointed out, the cops carried out a search and a bag, containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems, was discovered under his bed.
The 42-year-old Grant will have to be back in court on March 22.
