Nurses undergo training as clinical instructors

THE Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) is hosting a three-day workshop that started on Friday to train a batch of nurses to be clinical instructors. The nurses will pass on their skills acquired to their peers at health centres in Linden, Suddie, Lethem, Diamond, Leonora, Mahaicony and New Amsterdam.
Minister of Health Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, speaking at the opening of the training at the Cara Lodge on Quamina Street, said that this activity has been ongoing for some time, and has been planned very well by PAHO. “Nursing in Guyana is set to be pushed to higher levels and the Government of Guyana has made improvements to have more nurses being trained,” he added.
Minister Ramsaran pointed out that infrastructural improvements are being made at health centers and nursing schools, extending the classrooms for more space so health personnel will be better able to do their work.
Minister Ramsaran further added that with the training of these nurses there will be less foreign doctors brought into the country to work in the local hospitals. The number of trainee nurses has increased significantly because of the expansion of infrastructural development since several new hospitals have been built or rehabilitated.
PAHO/WHO Representative Dr. Beverley Barnett said the workshop targets clinical nurses and much emphasis is placed on their attitudes. She said work ethics must be observed no matter what issues are affecting persons.
Dr. Barnett added that the conditions for training and work can be optimised, and urged that everyone work with the resources given to them even though they may not be sufficient. (GINA)
