No confidence motion — a way to take attention away from issues : -Minister Whittaker

MINISTER in the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Norman Whittaker, has deemed the no confidence motion as a “new way of taking people’s focus away from the issues.”  He was at the time addressing the issue of the no confidence motion passed at the level of the New Amsterdam Municipality, with respect to the Deputy Mayor, and in Georgetown, against the Town Clerk.
Minister Whittaker said that thus far the ministry has been able to reconcile the issue in New Amsterdam.
“We let them see that the meeting that was convened during which this no confidence motion was brought was not properly convened, was not properly constituted and therefore decisions taken at that meeting were null and void,” he said.
The situation is different in Georgetown, as he explained that council has been putting forward a myriad of reasons as to why the motion was brought.
“Well, the council can do that, the council can convene a special meeting to move a no confidence motion, the council can also, if it so desires, at its normal statutory meeting do that, but ultimately, it is the Minister of Local Government and Regional Development who is responsible and who has the authority to employ and to discipline workers at that council at that level,” Minister Whittaker said.
He said that council has not presented to the ministry any details of reasons for the no confidence motion against the Town Clerk. “All we get is broad statements, ‘she is not delivering,’ ‘she is incompetent,” he said.
Minister Whittaker said that the ministry’s investigation has determined that all the fuss is because the Town Clerk is not working in the specific interest of council members. (GINA)
