Facing several charges… : Driver in December 20 fatal accident remanded

POLICE have charged a man in connection with the December 20 fatal accident at Lamaha and Carmichael Streets, Georgetown, which claimed the life of Rodwell Brumell. Seudatt Ramlall, 48, a welder employed with Mines Products and Services Limited appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday and was remanded to prison on several charges
The defendant, of Kersaint Park, La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty to causing death by dangerous driving; failing to report the accident to a Police station within 24 hours; failing to stop the vehicle immediately after the accident  occurred and failing to render assistance.
It is alleged that he drove motor car PGG 2758 in a manner dangerous to the public and caused the death of  Brumell.
Particulars of the other offences said they were committed the same day.
Police prosecutor Stephen Telford successfully objected to bail for the defendant, on grounds that Ramlall might flee the jurisdiction and that causing death by dangerous driving is a prevalent and serious offence.

REPAIRS
The prosecutor informed the Court that when the car was taken into custody, it was evident that repairs had begun.
He added that Ramlall was driving at a fast rate West along the southern carriageway of Lamaha Street when he hit Brumell, pitching the Farfan and Mendes Limited employee in the air before he fell to the ground where the vehicle ran over him.
According to the prosecutor, the defendant was arrested Thursday afternoon at his home and the car seized from a ‘bottom house’ bodywork shop at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.
Defence counsel Shellon Boyce, in her unsuccessful bail application, said Ramlall was willing to lodge his passport.
However, the magistrate decided he must remain incarcerated until January 8, 2013.
