Haiti wins third place after late goal from sub

NORTH SOUND, Antigua (CMC) – Late substitute Leonel St Preux scored early in extra time as Haiti defeated Martinique 1-nil to secure third place in the Caribbean Cup here Sunday night.

St Preux, who came off the bench ten minutes to the end of regulation time, converted five minutes into extra time in a low key all-French third place play-off at the Antigua Recreation Ground.
He flicked home an exquisitely delivered 40-yard pass from Wiselet Saint Lois to bring the game alive after more than 90 minutes of football that produced no goals.
Haiti, though, had the best chance in the first half, when Olrish Saurel’s free kick was pushed over the crossbar by Loic Chauvet.
After the interval, the 2007 Caribbean champions immediately went on the offensive and could have taken an early lead but an unmarked Fritznel Lois shot wide from inside the 18-yard box with only Chauvet to beat.
Haiti dominated possession in the first half without looking menacing against a Martinique team which had five changes from the semi-final against Trinidad and Tobago, including captain Sebastien Cretinoir.
However, Martinique came into their own in the second half when they began making some raids in the Haitian half.
Haitian keeper Jhony Placide sprang into action for the first time when substitute Daniel Herelle curled a free-kick to the far top corner, forcing the goalie to acrobatically tip the ball away as it looked to enter the net.
Jean-Philippe Peguero had two opportunities – just minutes apart as Chauvet saved his shot from close range and then had another rattle the Martinique crossbar.
A Daniel Herelle free kick just before the end of regulation almost gave Martinique the win. However, a diving Motrevil did well to keep the ball out of his net.
Haiti won US$50 000 for third spot, while fourth-placed finishers Martinique got US$30 000.
Haiti and Martinique now join new champions Cuba and beaten finalists Trinidad and Tobago as the four CFU qualifiers for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
