Non Pareil home of five destroyed by fire

FIRE, believed to be electrical in origin, destroyed a two-storey concrete dwelling at Lot 103 Section ‘B’ Non Pariel, East Coast Demerara, yesterday afternoon.

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) responded with two tenders and contained the blaze, saving the house next door with minimal damage to its lovure windows which were shattered by the intense heat and some water.
Tonza Edie, one of the five occupants of the burnt building, told the Guyana Chronicle that, when the blaze started, only her eight-year-old son was at home.
He had just returned from school and was in the lower flat when he heard a loud explosion, exited the premises and went to neighbours, his mother reported.
The Giftland Office Max employee said it was sometime after 13:00 hrs that she received a telephone call from her neighbour informing her that her home was ablaze and she hurried to the scene but, by then, the entire top flat was engulfed in flames and, within minutes, the lower flat was also reduced to rubble.
Edie, who broke down in tears several times as she lamented her disaster, said she left home for work at 07:30 hrs as usual and had turned off everything electrical but was told that shortly before the outbreak, there was a blackout and electricity was restored minutes prior to the conflagration.
She said, normally, they would turn off the main fuse in the building before leaving since most days no one is at home but she explained that low voltage is a regular occurrence in the area and, recently, she, as well as neighbours, lost several pieces of household appliances.
Edie said her losses are in millions because the place was well-furnished. It belongs to her sister, who lives overseas and had invited her to move in and be with her mother and other sister.
Edie said the house had a lot of things including what her mother had brought when she recently returned from the United States (U.S.).
Firefighters had the situation under control but were dousing the smoking embers as scores of residents watched.
Meanwhile, another fire of unknown origin, on Sunday afternoon, consumed Nesha’s Flowerland Shop at the corner of Church and Carmichael Streets, in Georgetown.
