TROY Liverpool, 38, of Courtland Public Road, Corentyne, the man who had been involved in an accident with a motor vehicle driven by a policeman while walking along the Fyrish roadway Corentyne, Berbice, on December 3, succumbed to his injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) at about 00:15 hrs yesterday.
Troy, called ‘Lil Man’, of Lot 22 Queen Street, Courtland Village, Corentyne, was reportedly struck from behind while walking with the mother of his child.
The police who allegedly struck down Liverpool has been identified as Inspector Michael Grant, a prosecutor on the Upper Corentyne. He attempted to drive away but was stopped by residents.
Grant has been placed under close arrest, and his car — black Toyota NZE registered PMM 831 – has been impounded at the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam.
It was reported that the policeman attempted to drive away from the scene after the accident, but he did not get a chance to escape because villagers who had witnessed the accident forced him to take the injured Liverpool to the New Amsterdam Hospital, from whence Liverpool was transferred to the GPHC.
Acting Police Commissioner Leroy Brumell has been quoted as saying that the incident was “a very serious matter”, and the prosecutor would be removed from the court pending the outcome of the investigation.
The top cop said he understands that the rank was given a breathalyzer test, but the equipment malfunctioned. He said he was also informed that Liverpool had been struck from behind.
“This is a serious matter, and as long as you commit yourself, you have to face the consequences,” Commissioner Brumell asserted.
