Association objects to article stigmatising Chinese entrepreneurs

THE Chinese Association of Guyana has strongly objected to a November 25 article in Kaieteur News which suggests that entrepreneurs from China are not complying with national laws in the conduct of their business in Guyana.

The publication was captioned ‘Going undercover…Chinese stores doing a lot-all wrong and some criminal’.
In a media release, Secretary of the Association, Mr. Kwok Fai Chu noted that the article said an “undercover operation” was conducted on Chinese stores in the commercial district of Regent and Robb Streets.
He said what was particularly alarming is that the newspaper went on to brand members of the Chinese business community as “criminals” engaging in “all wrong” business practices.
Chu said the Association always encourages all of its members to ensure full compliance with national laws and good business ethics.
He said the Association believed there may be instances where language barriers have led to misunderstandings but it was working with its members to overcome these obstacles.
Chu called on Kaieteur News and any other media which may have picked up the controversial story  to desist from such reports which single out and may lead to the stigmatisation of the Chinese community.
He also demanded a retraction of the news article which members of the Association believe was intended to cast the local community in a bad light.
