Following the accident, the badly injured man was rushed to the GPHC, where he was immediately treated by doctors present at the institution. He reportedly was unconscious, and appeared to have difficulty breathing.
When the Chronicle visited the hospital, doctors were busy pumping blood out of the man’s head, while his wife and other relatives flocked the exterior of the accident and emergency unit, hoping for the best and keeping a prayer vigil for the man’s recovery.
One relative commented that personnel at the hospital were not doing their best to keep the man alive. Another resident told this publication they had been informed by doctors that while the man’s heart was beating, all other organs, including his brain, were dead.
Last Saturday night saw a total of three reported road fatalities, including that of Livingstone. There had been a hit-and-run accident on the West Coast of Demerara in which a woman died, and a smash-up in Essequibo that left one man dead.
