Probe ordered as… : Larceny defendant on $100,000 bail alleges police beating

TRAVIS Nickles, of Lot 45 Joseph Pollydore Street, Lodge, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday, charged with larceny from the person. Particulars of the offence said, on November 26, he stole a gold chain, valued $65,000, from Savitri Singh but he pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Police Corporal Seon Blackman, prosecuting, said, however, that the virtual complainant was seated in a route 42 mini-bus when she felt someone grab her neck and, on turning around, she saw the defendant running away and realised that her jewel was gone.
The prosecutor said the woman raised an alarm and nearby police gave chase, arrested Nickles and recovered the booty in his possession.
The defendant acknowledged that he was in a bus when two policemen apprehended him and told him he had snatched a chain but he alleged that the police also beat him and took $30,000 from his pants pocket.
The magistrate ordered an investigation into the allegations made by the defendant and charges be proffered against the policemen if necessary.
Meantime, the defendant was placed on $100,000 bail and ordered to report to Brickdam Police Station, also in Georgetown, every Friday at 08:00 hrs, until he returns to court on December 17.
