TWENTY-ONE students of Mahdia Secondary School in Potaro, ranging in age between 13 and 15 years, are believed to have been temporarily supernaturally possessed after they were observed acting strangely. Reports out of Mahdia in Region 8 (Potaro/Siparuni) yesterday said the children were running around, destroying the windows and doors of the school building, as well as equipment and furniture inside.
Some even attempted to jump from the upper storey of the school.
Teachers called in parents and passersby to render assistance and the children were rushed to the nearby Mahdia Full Gospel Church, where Pastor Aaron Skeete prayed for them and some were sent home with guardians.
Chief Education Officer, Mr. Olata Sam was amazed to hear of the incident and began making investigations but efforts to contact the Regional Education Officer, Mrs. Marcia Paddy-Andrews proved futile.
Regional Executive Officer, Mr. Ronald Harsawack told the Guyana Chronicle he received reports that there was unusual behaviour by a number of female students, two of whom were taken to hospital, after jumping out the school windows and repeated the actions while undergoing medical examination.
He said one other student escaped from the medical institution but was recaptured in the vicinity of the Mahdia Police Station.
Other students were escorted for prayers by Pastor Skeete while more had commenced a different prayer session. Most of the affected students were females but none were found to be suffering from any medical complaint.
As a result, the Regional Administration has arranged an inter-faith service for all the schools today and sessions were suspended for the time being.
