THE Guyana Football Federation (GFF) is in serious trouble. The Executive leadership is under serious attacks from our dedicated and patriotic national footballers.
Certainly the GFF Secretariat is delinquent. Hence, several national players suffered loss of pay and more seriously lost their contracts with their overseas clubs and jobs because of those incompetent executives of the Guyana Football Secretariat. The GFF is suffering with poor reputation, corrupt and weak financial position, lack of professional administration, non-existent organisational culture and a total lack of accountability and transparency.
It is more serious and indeed unacceptable for the GFF executives ‘bosses’ to agree and sign a document for the footballers to get remuneration – stipend – and then vindictively refuse to honour their agreement.
Our national footballers withdrew their services from the National team and we lost consecutive matches in the current Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Championships. It is a shame on our football administrators.
The time is most opportune when the sport fraternity and the football fraternity in particular must rally in unity so that we can make the necessary changes and get the Executive of the GFF to function in a transparent, accountable and responsible manner. For too long football administrators are being allowed to take advantage on our committed and loyal footballers.
The captain of the National football team, Christopher Nurse, came out with a public statement exposing the fraudulent and incompetent administrators in football. The dispute between the Georgetown Football Association and the GFF must be resolved amicably, which is now a national disgrace and an embarrassment to sport in Guyana.
A few years ago a respectable lawyer who is now a Member of Parliament contested the position for President of the GFF.
That honest and highly respected individual was cheated and even his friend who is also a Member of Parliament did nothing to resolve the rigging of elections in the national body.
Ironically both Members of Parliament are sitting on the opposition benches.
The GFF switched the Mexico return match from Georgetown to the United States of America. They did not have the simple courtesy to inform the Government about their changes. It is public knowledge that they went after big money. Now the game is over and not a word of explanation with regard how much money was received. It is circulating in the International arena that they received approximately US$3M.
However, whatever is the sum they collected, it is important and a matter of decency for the GFF to disclose to the players and the nation this fact. An Agreement was reached in Houston, Texas prior to the Mexico/Guyana Games. All the players met with four executive members of GFF and agreed in writing on several issues at the end of the game which brought in millions of Guyana dollars to the GFF. The Executive Members failed to honour their commitment instead they kicked the footballers around the place as much as the footballers themselves kicked the ball during matches.
Over the very many years, football in Guyana at all the levels has experienced negative growth. The GFF, regardless of who is at the helm, seems to be in the wilderness. The leadership seems to have no direction. It is said that if you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there.
Our footballers have been treated with scant respect. It gives the impression that our national footballers must survive under the will and fancy of the GFF who cares less of their welfare.
The impasse between the GFF and the GFA is on for far too long. The administrators must understand that here is football and not self.
Our young footballers are left to the mercy of those who are not capable of taking the game to the next level.
The GFF cannot cry out for money. They have it in the millions. What are they doing with it? Surely, the executives must be able to answer. As a matter of fact, they must be honest and let us all know. Monies received by the GFF is not for the benefit for the executives only, but also for the development of football throughout Guyana.
Questions for the GFF: “What is the status of the Gold Cup Project for which millions have to be received?” How much money they collected from the match played between Guyana and Mexico in Texas? When will they hold Elections? When will they produce a simple programme for the development of football in Guyana?
Let the football fraternity call on those in authority to do what is possible in the interest of our footballers and the discipline in particular.
