Thomas, Nandalall maintain lead in Dr Chase Senior Chess Championship

SENIOR chess players Maria Thomas and Shiv Nandalall continued their winning streak when the fourth round ended on Wednesday November 21 at the Ocean Spray Hotel.

They are still jointly leading the Dr Chase Senior Chess Championship.
The two frontrunners are to meet the defending champion this weekend in the final stages of the tournament and the 2012 senior chess champion would be determined.
Thomas and Nandalall demolished their opponents Craig Sylvester and Frankie Farley respectively, while defending champion Taffin Khan obtained a walkover from Berbician Kriskal Persaud who was a no-show. Loris Nathoo defeated Glenford Corlette in their encounter.
However, the fifth round gets under way today at 16:30hrs as tournament leaders Nandalall and Thomas will be engaged in an anticipated tense encounter. The result of that match could determine the sole leader after five rounds in the seven-round tournament.
A playoff would become necessary to identify the winner of the championship if two players end on the same score after seven rounds. Rounds six and seven are scheduled for tomorrow.
The scores after four rounds read: Thomas and Nandalall four points apiece, Taffin Khan three and a half points, Frankie Farley two points, Loris Nathoo two and a half points while Craig Sylvester, Kriskal Persaud and Glenford Corlette are yet to score.
