AFTER eight weeks of dominoes across the length and breadth of Guyana and 12 rounds of exciting matches in the playoffs; the F& H Printing Countrywide Million Dollar Plus Competition concluded last Sunday at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue. TNT Dominoes Team, of Georgetown, representing their name fully, stayed potentially dangerous and exploded at the right time to dominate the finals and emerge as the eventual winners and G$500 000 richer, with a score of 78 games.
In second place were West Side of West Coast Demerara with 69 games. This position earned them G$250 000 while the most liked and popular team in the competition, Limpy Lotto, led by the entertaining Vackacy Joe and Esther Manjet, out of Bartica ended in an honourable third place with 58 games and G$100 000;
Other positions were: Assassins fourth, receiving G$60 000, Providence fifth, earning G$35 000, Rage sixth, collecting G$25 000.
The winners, second- and third-placed teams were also given trophies and nine medals per team.
Dominoes is a game of tactics and knowing which team may favour one against the other is critical. The Limpy Lotto team who played throughout with only 5 players were muscling their way forward against the odds and gaining respect with Vackacy and Esther leading the end game with their ‘bruck it down’ dominoes style.
However, at a key point they blundered tactically.
They got it right in favouring Assassins and not Rage in the quarter-finals but after West Side drew the bye to the finals, they needed to keep favouring Assassins in the semi-finals and not TNT, but they went the wrong way and this may have cost them the final, since the final would have been anybody’s game.
It was public knowledge that there was West Side blood in the TNT camp.
Additional prizes won were:
MVP (Finals) G$10 000 (Shawn Morgan of TNT)
1st Double Love (Playoffs) G$5 000 (Gordon Peters of Adventure)
Best Female Team (Playoffs) G$5 000 Turning Point Girls)
1st Love (Finals) G$3 000 (Vackacy Joe who loved Leroy Ewards of TNT)
Best Far-Reaching area team G$25 000 (Limpy Lotto of Bartica)
Best Corporation Team G$15 000 (Ministry of Health) – reached the last 8
Best Uniform team G$30 000 (B6)
Teams winning their respective zones also received zone prizes of G$10 000 while each team participating in the playoffs received a pack of branded dominoes, compliments of F&H Printing Establishment and out-of-town teams were assisted with travelling expenses and accommodation.
The organising committee came in for high praise in raising the bar of dominoes competition in Guyana. The organisers on the other hand felt that there were areas which needed improvement and held their review meeting on Tuesday evening, prior to compiling their final report.
The sponsors have indicated that they will again partner with the Georgetown Dominoes Association and will invite other sponsors on board in this national effort to return dominoes to its glory days.
F&H Printing has also committed themselves to reach out to sub-associations to make dominoes once again become a truly competitive sport, which will be played at the national level.
F&H Printing would like to thank all the persons who lent invaluable support to make the competition a success and would like to single out the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and in particular Mr Neil Kumar, Director of Sport and Mr Harry who provided crucial support in securing the facilities.
