THE University of Guyana’s Council has shortlisted four of 19 applicants for the post of Vice-Chancellor of the institution and they will be individually interviewed and will undergo evaluations by the Council appointed for that task.
Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon, reported yesterday that three of the four short-listed applicants are from the Diaspora. Dr. Rory Fraser, Dr. Jaipaul Singh and Dr. Muniram Boodhoo are all Guyanese
nationals and overseas-tenured academics.
The fourth applicant is Dr. Jacob Opadeyi, a Nigerian national employed at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad.
Dr. Luncheon reported that the interview process should be concluded by the end of this month and the appointment would be announced shortly thereafter.
On the issue of the Acting Vice Chancellor of UG’s Berbice Campus expressing an interest in the position, Dr. Luncheon noted that while he may have been one of the 19 applicants, the four shortlisted applicants were selected by the UG Council body and the Berbice VC (ag.).
Questioned by the media on why a local Guyanese or someone currently employed by the University was not considered, Dr. Luncheon stated that while there is no doubt that there are benefits which could accrue from putting a Guyanese in that post, the UG Council must be given the remit and be allowed to do their job. “They did not pick Guyanese who were employed by the University of Guyana, they went for three overseas Guyanese and one Nigerian to assume this position,” he stated.
