THE Guyana Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha Youth Group and Ashram at Lot 162 Lamaha Street, North Cummingsburg yesterday held a ‘Rangoli’ presentation and cultural show in observance of Diwali which will be celebrated on November 13.
The presentation was aimed at displaying colours and artistic skills in which coloured rice was used to create representation of Gods and symbols of the Hindu religion. There was also a sweet meat sale.
Following the presentation, a cultural show was put on that featured performances from members of the Ashram. It included Diwali songs, skits, group dances, singing and modelling among others
Members of the Guyana Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha Youth Group Yogeshwar Mattoo pointed out that the Ashram has been host to this presentation for seven years and does this as an early observance of Diwali for Hindu brothers and sisters.
He explained that “Rangoli” means a rose of colours and this year they have decided to use a lot more colours for a more festive look.
Mattoo added that a rangoli festival as such is meant to bring persons together as it is done as a group activity and more importantly, done to mark the commencement of the Diwali season.
A Rangoli is a colourful and beautiful design made of coloured rice; it is used at many Hindu functions as a decorative means and comes in many shapes, colours and sizes.
