Infant killed in Triumph accident to be buried today

EZEKIEL Harris, the seven-year-old who was killed by a speeding car while attempting to cross Agriculture Road, Triumph, East Coast Demerara on Friday last, will be laid to rest today (Wednesday).

altA post-mortem was performed on his body on Monday, but the child’s mother, Melinda Harris, could not say what were the results, and the police were not in receipt of that report when contacted yesterday.
Ms Harris, however, disclosed that the driver of the car had been in police custody up to press time, while investigations are continuing.
The Police Traffic Department yesterday disclosed that for this year, so far, 90 fatalities have been recorded from 83 road accidents involving seven children; while, for the corresponding period last year, 98 persons had been killed in 90 road accidents involving 10 children.
Police investigations into the fatal accident of seven-year-old pedestrian Ezekiel Harris of South Vryheid’s Lust, ECD, which occurred at about 13:00hrs on Friday at Agriculture Road, Triumph, East Coast Demerara (ECD), have so far revealed that the driver of motor car PHH 8344 was proceeding along the roadway when Harris allegedly attempted to cross the road from behind a parked motor lorry, was struck down, and later pronounced dead on arrival at the GPHC.
The driver of the motor car is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
His mother, Melinda Harris, 36, told the Guyana Chronicle that she was unaware that her son had left the home until her elder son, Quincy Harris, 15, told her that Ezekiel was involved in a road accident and was unconscious.

The grieving woman said she learnt that a relative, Gavin Johnson, 12, had left home via public transportation (minibus) with Ezekiel and his six-year-old brother to go to a masjid at Agriculture Road to collect beef. When they were returning home after collecting one pound of beef, Ezekiel was struck down by a speeding car.
Gavin Johnson told this publication that he and his cousins were walking on Agriculture Road, Triumph, East Coast Demerara, when Ezekiel was hit by a car. Residents who witnessed the accident stopped the driver and compelled him to take the injured child to the hospital.
A family friend who had journeyed to the GPHC said she had seen the lifeless body of Ezekiel. His head was bruised and swollen, and she was made to understand that he had succumbed to his injuries upon arrival at the hospital.
It would appear that the former pupil of Vryheid’s Lust Primary School died from severe head and body injuries.
