EZEKIEL HARRIS, seven, of 250 South Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara was killed yesterday afternoon when he was struck down by a speeding motorcar on Agriculture Road, Triumph.
Mother of the child, Melinda Harris, 36, told the Guyana Chronicle that she was unaware that her son had left the house until her elder son, Quincy Harris, 15, told her that Ezekiel was involved in a road accident and was unconscious.
The grieving woman added that she learnt that a relative, Gavin Johnson, 12, had left home with Ezekiel and a younger brother, who is six years old, and had gone in a minibus to a masjid on Agriculture Road to collect beef.
She noted that it was when they were returning home after collecting eleven pounds of beef that Ezekiel was struck down by a speeding car and rendered unconscious.
Gavin Johnson told this publication that residents, who witnessed the accident, stopped the driver and compelled him to take the injured child to the hospital.
Ezekiel was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital shortly after 14:00hrs, and there the driver was taken into police custody pending investigations.
Johnson said that he and his cousins were walking on Agriculture Road, Triumph, East Coast Demerara, when Ezekiel was hit by the car.
It would appear that the child, who was a pupil of Vryheid’s Lust Primary School, died from severe head injuries.
When the Guyana Chronicle visited his home, his mother and others were preparing to go to the police station accompanied by Gavin Johnson.
Melinda Harris cried uncontrollably saying that her son left home unknown to her, and was killed for one pound of beef and openly rebuked Johnson for taking her children from home without her consent.
Ezekiel is survived by six siblings, one of whom is overseas, his father and scores of relatives and friends.
As news of the child’s demise spread, villagers gathered at the home of the Harris and tried to comfort his grieving mother and others who were all distressed yesterday.
