Raiders win twice to move top of points standing : … Unbeaten Jets hand Kings second loss

THE RETRIEVE Raiders won their matches over the last weekend to move on top of the points standing with six points after their third straight win, as top-ranked Kashif and Shanghai Kings suffered another loss to the second-ranked Amelia’s Ward Jets. All this occurred when play in the Linden Amateur Basketball Association-organised BOSAI Minerals Group (Guyana) Inc. Open Challenge basketball tournament continued at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court in Linden last weekend.
Ranked at six when seven teams were chosen for this championship, the Raiders continued their impressive play as their national players centre-forward Dwayne Roberts and forward Neil Marks engineered their win over Half Mile Bulls 68-47 last Saturday night.
Roberts led his team with 18 points, guard Sheldon Noel contributed 14 and Marks chipped in with 11 against a Bulls side which saw the top shoots for them being Keon Cameron with 11 points, Sean Adams and Travin Dryden eight each and top player Michael Turner with only five.
Earlier that same night, Victory Valley Royals rebounded after losing their opening game against the Raiders, thumping Block 22 Flames 81-42 as they were led by the experienced Julius Carter who had a game-high 19 points with youth national Marlon Pollydore getting 14 and Orlando Glasgow 10 against Aubrey Johnson and Selwyn Noble who shone for the Flames with 12 points apiece.
On Sunday, the Jets overcame the Kings 54-48, handing the top-ranked team their second successive defeat in many nights.
Centre Allister Webster and guard Kevin Joseph each got 11 points while Ruel McKinnon shot in seven for the Jets, as the Kings sharp-shooter guard Orin Rose had knocked in a game-high 23 points and centre Omally Sampson supported with 12.
Earlier Sunday night Retrieve Raiders scored their third win with a commanding 77-39 victory against the Flames, thanks to Marks, 16 points, Noel 15 and forward Louis James added 11.
The competition continues this weekend, with Jets looking to record their third win when they take on Bulls in the first game tomorrow while the second contest brings together Kings who will seek to score their first win when they confront the Royals.
On Sunday the Kings return to face Block 22 Flames in the first game and the second is between the unbeaten Raiders and Jets, with all matches being played at the MSC hard court.
At present the Raiders lead the points race to the semifinals having three wins, followed by Jets with two wins for four points as Royals, Bulls and Flames have three points each, but the Royals and Bulls have a win and a loss while the Flames have three losses and the top-ranked Kings are on two points from two defeats in the tournament, which is being played on a round-robin basis with the top four clubs advancing to the semifinals and final.
