Health Ministry gets $25M donation from Chinese gov’t

THE relationship between the Governments of Guyana and China has grown from strength to strength over the years, with Guyana benefitting from the services of Chinese doctors and the provision of medical scholarships for Guyanese to study in China. This partnership has now been strengthened with a donation of medical tools and equipment valued at $25M that will benefit general surgery, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, gynaecology and obstetrics, plastic surgery, and endocrinology departments.
The donation also includes an ultrasound machine for the Linden Hospital Complex, Region 10.
Minister of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, expressed his gratitude for the donation and highlighted successes in the health sector made possible through bilateral relationships with other countries, one of which is Cuba.
He noted that during a recent outreach at the Wales Community Ground, Region 3, 15,000 citizens benefitted from medical attention and the event was well supported by Cuban nationals and a dentist who has completed the dentistry programme in China.
Guyana’s National Ophthalmology Hospital in Port Mourant is  a result of good relations with the Cuban Government.
Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Yu Wenzhe, indicated that the equipment will be distributed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), the Linden Hospital Complex and other health institutions.
With regard to the medical outreaches being carried out by the Health Ministry, Ambassador Wenzhe noted that their purpose is to take medical services to the ordinary people so they too can enjoy the available services.
Ambassador Wenzhe said the 10th Chinese medical brigade which has been in Guyana for four months has already developed good working relations with their Guyanese colleagues and patients, and most importantly, they serve as a bridge between Guyana and China.
Ambassador Wenzhe pointed out that China will continue to provide assistance to the best of its ability to Guyana.
With regard to the provision of medical scholarships, the Ambassador disclosed that the Government of China has issued eight scholarships to Guyanese youths to study medicine, dentistry and general medicine. These scholarships are provided according to the needs of the country.
In1972, Guyana and China established diplomatic ties and to date their bilateral relations have witnessed steady development, evident in the realisation of the Skeldon Sugar Factory; the Guyana International Conference Centre; the two ferry vessels Kanawan and Sabanto; the donation of thousands of laptops for the One Laptop Per Family project, and training of GDF Air Corps pilots and engineers.
This year marks 40 years since Guyana and China started diplomatic ties.
