Man charged with having murder weapon remanded

FIFTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD Kenneth Khanhai was refused bail and remanded to prison on Wednesday, charged with being in possession of a firearm and ammunition suspected to have been used in the murder of Bibi Shamudeen called ‘Sharmilla’.

The security guard, of Gangaram Settlement, East Canje, appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo, at
New Amsterdam Court, also in Berbice, on the indictable charge of having one .38 special revolver without being the holder of a firearm licence in force at the time.
In addition, the defendant is alleged to have had twenty-three 16-gauge cartridges without the relevant licence.
Police told the court that, on October 9, at Best Coffee Land, New Forest, the defendant took ranks to a cultivation plot where the articles were buried, having previously informed them that the gun and ammunition were hidden there. A man is presently before the court charged with the capital offence.
Khanhai has to be back in court on November 7.
The Shamudeen woman is alleged to have been murdered at her New Area, East Canefield, Canje, Berbice home on March 20, 2012.
